Two years ago, I lived in three different homes, starting in Oakville, residing briefly in Burlington and ending up at our dream home in the country west of Milton.
I learned alot in the process. Other than the obvious lesson, do not do it again for at least a year, here's the best tips I came out of it with:
1. Throw stuff out: Before you move - get rid of it. If you didn't use it in your current home, you probably won't in your next!
2. Set Up One Room as"Packing Central": Insist packing supplies they get returned to this place. Otherwise they will disappear.
3. Mark the Contents and New "Home Room": Do this for each box, as you pack it. Saves you from rooting through boxes.
4. Use Plastic Storage Bins: Inexpensive plastic bins are great for packing stuff that you know will sit in your storage area for ages.
5. Use Baggies and Masking Tape to Keep Things Together: Keep bookends with books, light bulbs and cords with lamps.
6. Designate a Parts Box: Set aside a "Parts Box", fill it with cables, cords, parts, pieces, brackets, or nails that are removed.
7. Pack ahead: Anything you can pack ahead will save you time closer to moving day.
8. Use Your Luggage for stuff you'll want right away: Even for local moves you'll quickly find your jammies and toothbrushes.
9. Keep valuables with you: If you have a long move and no room in your car, bury the items in a box titled "Misc. from kitchen pantry".
10. Keep important papers with you: Don't leave these with the mover. Keep them with you!
Moving will not be the most fun you've ever had - planning ahead will go a long way toward making the process bearable!
